SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse Orange lost its first match at home since April 3, 2004 on Friday afternoon as St. John’s came into the Drumlins Tennis Club and snuck out a 4-3 victory. The Red Storm played the roll of spoiler on Friday as they snapped SU’s 15-match, home winning streak and junior Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) lost in three hard fought sets to end her impressive run of 14 straight singles victories, a new Syracuse school record. The Orange is now 14-6 (6-2 BIG EAST) on the year and will advance to the BIG EAST Tournament to be held April 20-23 in Tampa, Fla.

St. John’s added its name to a list of just three other schools to have come away with the doubles point against the Orange this season. Syracuse took an early lead in the doubles competition when Lipton and junior Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) cruised to an 8-0 victory at number three. St. John’s evened the score by winning at number one, 8-5, and then won the point after Syracuse junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) and senior Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) lost, 8-6, at number two.
In singles action, freshman Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) lost the opening set 6-3 and was then forced to retire at flight four. At number two, sophomore Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rang up a 6-2, 6-1 victory to narrow the Red Storm lead to 2-1.
Bramante lost the first set at flight three singles and trailed to start the second before staging a comeback that came up short as she lost, 6-4, 7-5. Sophomore Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) improved to 5-1 against BIG EAST opponents this season by earning a 7-5, 7-5 victory at number one, however the Orange still trailed, 3-2.
At flight five, Lipton won the first set 7-5 and opened up a 3-0 lead in the second before St. Johns’ Alison Adamski fought her way back to take the second 6-4 and then clinched the match for the Red Storm by winning the third, 6-2. Huignard finished off a back-and-forth match at flight six with a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory.
SU has concluded its regular season and will compete in the BIG EAST Tournament in Tampa, Fla. on the campus of South Florida, April 20-23.
