SU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and went on to a 14-7 win against the Quakers. Tom Nelson and Brad Kotz scored three goals apiece to lead the Orange offense. Syracuse defeated North Carolina in the national semifinals before losing to Johns Hopkins in the national championship game.
The Orange won three consecutive national championships from 1988-90. Syracuse was looking for its fourth straight title in 1991 when it hosted Michigan State in the first round of the tournament. SU outscored the Spartans, 15-1, in the second quarter and posted a 28-7 victory. Thirteen different players scored goals for Syracuse, including Jamie Archer, who led the way with six goals. In the national semifinals, the Orange defeated Johns Hopkins to advance to the title game for the fourth straight year. In addition to athletic events, Syracuse University has held its commencement ceremonies in the Dome on this date in 1988 and 2005.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
