NEW YORK, N.Y. – Syracuse tight end Joe Kowalewski signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets, announced yesterday by the organization. Kowalewski, a native of Warners, N.Y., started in 19 games the last two seasons for the Orange.
Despite missing three games due to injury in 2005, Kowaleski still caught 14 passes for 199 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The yard and touchdowns totals were both career highs as a senior. He had 14 catches in 2004 and 2005, which is the most catches by a tight end since Stephen Brominski caught 20 in 1999.
Kowaleski closed his Orange career by catching at least one pass in 11-straight games. Against Virginia on Sept. 17, he recorded career highs with seven catches for 96 yards. He also had a touchdown reception against the Cavaliers and another one at Notre Dame.
He finished his career with 31 catches for 441 yards and three touchdowns.
Kowaleski will be the first Orange to suit up for the Jets since Will Hunter did in 2003. Hunter is now a member of the Minnesota Vikings. The only other Syracuse tight end to be a part of the Jets squad is Pat Kelly, who was on the team from 1989-1992.
