The Carrier Dome has hosted men’s and women’s NCAA Lacrosse Tournament action three times on this date. The Syracuse men’s lacrosse squad has been victorious in both of its contests on this date. Both wins sent the Orange to the national semifinals.
Syracuse took its first step toward its first national championship on this date in 1983 when it hosted Pennsylvania in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Randy Lundblad led the Orange with three goals, while Tim Nelson had a goal and five assists in SU’s 18-11 victory. The win gave Syracuse a spot in the national semifinals where it defeated Maryland, 12-5. SU went on to beat Johns Hopkins, 17-16, in the national final for the school’s first NCAA Championship.
The Orange hosted Rutgers in the quarterfinals of the 1986 NCAA Tournament. Syracuse jumped out to an 8-0 lead and went on to a 17-5 victory. Tom Korrie and Todd Curry each scored three goals in SU’s early scoring run. Korrie finished with five goals and three assists, while Curry had four goals and one assist. Syracuse advanced to the NCAA semifinals the next weekend where it lost to Virginia, 12-10.
The Princeton women’s lacrosse team claimed the 2003 national championship on this date with an 8-7 overtime win against Virginia in the Dome.
In addition to lacrosse action, the Dome hosted a figure skating exhibition featuring former Olympians in 2002 and the Kumbak Dinner in 1985.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
