WACO, Texas – The 2005 Syracuse Orange football team received the 2006 Academic Achievement Honorable Mention Award from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). SU was among 28 schools in the nation named to the honorable mention list. Southern Methodist earned the 2006 AFCA Academic Achievement Award.
The award is presented annually by the Touchdown Club of Memphis, which Syracuse won in 2000 for having a graduation rate of 100 percent. This is the 15th time that the Orange has been recognized by the AFCA for its academic achievement, which ranks eighth among all other schools in the country. It is also the top number of any other BIG EAST school currently in the conference. Rutgers and West Virginia have both been named to the list four times.
Three of the senior members from last season’s team were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Tommy Harris (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Kevin Kopko (Collegeville, Pa.), and Justin Opalenski (Providence, R.I.) were among those honored by the conference for their academic performance.
Notre Dame is tops in the nation with 25 appearances since 1981. They have been recognized every year since 1982. Duke and Virginia round out the top three with 23 and 21 appearances, respectively. Boston College, Rice, and Vanderbilt have been listed 18 times each and Penn State is one ahead of the Orange with 16 appearances.
