This Day in Dome History: May 25
5/25/2006 1:56:52 PM | Men's Lacrosse, Dome 25
For the second time in four years, the Carrier Dome hosted the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament championship weekend in 1991, with the semifinals taking place on this date. The Orange entered the tournament that year looking for its fourth straight national title. SU was seeded fifth, its lowest seed since 1981. Syracuse defeated Michigan State and Johns Hopkins, securing a spot in the semifinals for the ninth straight season. SU's magical run came to an end when it lost to top-ranked and unbeaten North Carolina, 19-13.
With Jamie Archer out with an illness and John Winship lost in the first minute of the game with an injury, the Orange fought hard, but could not overcome Carolina's depth. SU rallied from a seven-goal, fourth-quarter deficit to cut the lead to 16-13, but the Tar Heels scored the final three goals for a 19-13 win. Tom Marechek, Dom Fin and Steve Bettinger had three goals each for SU.
In addition to men's lacrosse action, the Dome hosted the Greek Olympics in 1985 and 1986.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
