FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Syracuse defensive end Kader Drame has signed a free agent contract with the New England Patriots, announced today by the team. Drame, who has played in every game since 2003, will join former Orange Tebucky Jones on the Patriots roster, who signed with New England this past off season after spending last year with the Miami Dolphins.
Drame and the rest of New England’s rookies will head to Gillette Stadium this weekend for mini-camp on May 13-14.
Drame finished the 2005 season with 26 tackles, including 18 solo stops. He recorded career highs with four tackles for a loss for 20 yards. His three pass break ups matched his personal best that he set in 2004, and he forced the only fumble of his career in the season opener against West Virginia.
For his career, Drame posted 78 tackles, including 44 solo. He totaled eight tackles for a loss for 28 yards and had a half a sack. He broke up three passes and also recovered a fumble.
Drame and Jones will be the first former Orange to join the Patriots since Jones was there from 1998-2002 when he was originally drafted by New England.
Drame is just the latest of a number of Syracuse seniors to join the NFL ranks. Anthony Smith was drafted by the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers with the 19th pick in the third round (83rd overall). Quinn Ojinnaka was selected by Atlanta with the sixth pick in the fifth round (139th overall). James Wyche and Ryan LaCasse were selected in the seventh round by Jacksonville and Baltimore, respectively. The Jaguars took Wyche with the fifth pick in the round (213th overall selection). Six spots after Wyche was selected, LaCasse was chosen by Baltimore with the 219th overall pick.
Following the draft, four other Orange seniors were picked up by teams. Steve Franklin signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs and Steve Gregory signed with San Diego. Damien Rhodes inked a deal with Houston and Alex Shor joined Arizona.
