McKenzie and Carter Join List of Syracuse Players in Big 33 Football Classic

Offensive lineman Jim McKenzie (Springfield, Pa.) and running back Delone Carter (Copley, Ohio) competed against each other in the 49th Big 33 Football Classic played in Hershey, Pa. earlier this month. Both McKenzie and Carter will join the Orange football program as freshman for pre-season camp in August. They join the long list of Syracuse football student-athletes to play in the annual all-star game that includes current Syracuse quarterback Perry Patterson, tight end Brandon Darlington and running back Curtis Brinkley, who all played for Pennsylvania in the Big 33 Classic.
McKenzie’s Pennsylvania squad won the game, 61-42, marking the Keystone State’s first victory in three years. For Ohio, Carter rushed for 115 yards and scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one on a 78 yard reception. His rushing touchdown gave Ohio the lead one minute into the game.
A native of Springfield, Pa., McKenzie earned Class AAAA Associated Press First Team All-State honors as a senior at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School.
Carter, who hails from Copley, Ohio, earned 2005 Ohio Mr. Football honors while being named Sports Person of the Year by the Dapper Dan Sports Club of Akron. As a senior, Carter led the state of Ohio with 2,788 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns.
During the Big 33 Classic week, McKenzie and Carter participated in a number of community activities, in addition to team practices. The football players visited Hershey area hospitals and medical care facilities and conducted a youth football clinic.
The 2006 Syracuse football squad reports for preseason camp on August 6. The Orange open the season at Wake Forest on September 2 at 6:30 p.m.. and will be broadcast on ESPN360.
