Wearing the legendary 44, Brown was an unstoppable force during his tenure at Syracuse. He was selected as a unanimous football All-American in 1956 and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. Brown amassed 986 yards and scored 13 touchdowns in eight games during his senior season. Against Colgate, he set a NCAA record by scoring 43 points. In the 1957 Cotton Bowl against TCU, Brown rushed for 132 yards on 22 carries and scored 21 of SU’s 27 points en route to being named the game’s top back.
Brown was selected as an All-American in lacrosse on two occasions, earning second-team accolades in 1956 and first-team honors in 1957. He matched his Colgate record by scoring 43 goals during his senior campaign, leading the nation in scoring. The Orange finished the 1957 season with a perfect 10-0 record.
