OFFENSE
The biggest void on offense the Deacons will have to fill is at running back after the graduation of Chris Barclay, the 2005 ACC Player of the Year. Barclay rushed for 1,127 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior. He was the first player in ACC history to lead the conference in rushing three times and ended his career at Wake Forest as the school’s all-time leader in rushing yards (4,032), scoring (240 points), touchdowns (40) and all-purpose yards (4,390). Junior Micah Andrews is the most experienced running back on the current roster. He appeared in 10 games last season and was the Deacons second-leading usher with 621 yards and one touchdown. Junior quarterback Ben Mauck (above) was in and out of the starting role last season. The preseason starter, Mauck was taken out after Wake Forest began the season 1-3. He was back under center two games later when his replacement went down with an injury and led the Deacons to wins over North Carolina State and Duke at the end of the season. Mauck went 3-3 as a starter in 2005, completing 85 passes for 821 yards with one touchdown and six interceptions. The Deacon offensive line has combined for 84 career starts, the sixth-highest total in the NCAA. Senior tackle Steve Vallos was named to the Lombardi and Outland Award preseason watch lists. DEFENSE
The Wake Forest defense returns 10 starters, the most of any other team in the NCAA. Junior linebacker Jon Abbate (right) led the team in tackles (77) last season and is on the Bednarik Award preseason watch list. He has led the team in tackles in both of his first two seasons. Junior defensive end Matt Robinson recorded a team-high 4.5 sacks. Safety Josh Gattis, a second-team all-conference selection, was tied for eighth in the NCAA with five interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Linebacker Aaron Curry and defensive back Alphonso Smith were both first-team Freshman All-American selections. 2005 Demon Deacons Review
The Demon Deacons finished 2005 in a tie for fourth place with Maryland and North Carolina State in the Atlantic Division of the new-look ACC. It was the second-straight season that Wake Forest finished 4-7. The Deacons averaged 197 rushing yards per game, the best in the ACC for the fourth time in five years, but their passing attack and total defense both ranked next to last. Wake Forest allowed 252 yards through the air and recorded only 15 sacks. They were tied for third in the conference with 14 interceptions.
