OFFENSE
The Scarlet Knights return their top two rushers from a year ago in sophomore running back Ray Rice and senior fullback Brian Leonard. Rice gained 1,120 yards, making him the first Rutgers freshman running back to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark, and scored five touchdowns. Leonard, (below)a two-
time All-American, gained 740 yards on the ground and scored 11 touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading receiver with 55 catches for 568 yards and six touchdowns. Sophomore Mike Teel seasoned is the most seasoned quarterback on the Rutgers roster, appearing in nine games last season with three starts. Teel completed 51 passes for 683 yards and two touchdowns, both against Syracuse. Senior tight end Clark Harris, a two-time first team All-BIG EAST member, caught 38 passes for 584 yards and four touchdowns last season. Rutgers will have to replace Tres Moses, a second-team All-BIG EAST selection in 2005 and the team’s all-time leading receiver. The Scarlet Knights have a quartet of wide receivers with game experience, led by senior Shawn Tucker, who had 32 catches for 482 yards and a touchdown a year ago. Rutgers also features the 2005 BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Year in senior wide receiver Willie Foster. Between kickoff and punt return duties, Foster combined for 900 yards and two scores.
DEFENSE
The deepest portion of Rutgers’ defense is the secondary, where three starters return. Sophomore safety Courtney Greene, (right) a freshman All-American, led the team with 116 tackles. Alongside him will be junior Ron Girault who
ranked third on the team with 86 stops and had a team-high three interceptions. Senior linebacker Devraun Thompson anchors the middle of the Rutgers defense. Thompson was second on the team with 97 tackles in 2005. The biggest changes for the Scarlet Knights come on the defensive line, where they will have to replace defensive ends Ryan Neil and Val Barnaby; both of whom registered 10 sacks last season. Senior Ramel Meekins, who had nine sacks in 2005, will fill in one slot, while the other is still undecided.
2005 Review
The Scarlet Knights recorded the school’s first winning season in 13 years and appeared in a bowl for the first time in 27 years. After losing the season opener to Illinois by three points, Rutgers won three-consecutive games. Rutgers had another close loss to West Virginia before reeling off three more victories. They stumbled in November, losing to South Florida and Louisville in high-scoring affairs, but beat Cincinnati to close out the regular season and earned a bid to the Insight Bowl. Rutgers fell to Arizona State in a barnburner, 45-40. Rutgers had the second-best total offense in the BIG East in 2005, but the team’s defense was ranked sixth.
