Former Syracuse rower Anna Goodale and the women’s eight United States National Team won the gold medal at the 2006 World Championships in Eton, England. The women’s eight finished with a time of 5:55.50, setting a new world record. Germany finished second at 5:57.29 and Australia finished third with a time of 6:00.29.
Goodale was member of the women’s eight crew that finished fourth at the 2005 World Championships, held in Gifu, Japan.
Syracuse head rowing coach Kris Sanford is excited for Goodale and her triumph at the World Championships.
“I think it’s great that she won,” Sanford said. “It’s great for her and the program. She loves to row. She is one of the nicest people you will meet. Anna is doing what she loves to do. She is fulfilling her dream.”
A 2005 graduate, Goodale was recognized as a three-time All-American during her career at Syracuse. She earned first-team honors in 2003 and 2005 and was named to the second team in 2004. Goodale was also named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Mid-Atlantic Region All-American First Team her sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
Goodale also received numerous academic honors during her four years at SU. She was recognized as the 2005 Orange Plus Scholar Athlete of the Year and she received the Soladay Award, the most prestigious award given to a student-athlete by the Department of Athletics. She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District I Second Team in 2005 and earned the CRCA National Scholar Athlete Award on three occasions.
Sanford believes that Goodale’s success can be a great example for current and future Syracuse student-athletes. Like many SU rowers, Goodale was a walk-on and did not have any high school experience before enrolling at Syracuse. Through her hard work and love for the sport, Goodale became one of the most decorated athletes in the program’s history.
“Anna is a great role model, particularly this time of year when we are looking for walk-ons,” Sanford said. “She worked hard she showed that the skies the limit in our sport.”
Goodale is not the first Syracuse rower to compete internationally. Tracy Rude represented the United States at the 1992 Olympics and Kristin Walker-Bidwell was a member of the U.S. National Team at the 1990 World Championships. In addition, Helen Tanger competed for the Netherlands at the 2005 World Championship, edging out Goodale and the U.S. team for bronze.
During Goodale’s tenure at Syracuse, the Orange won two BIG EAST Championships in 2002 and 2003 and made two appearances at the NCAA Championship (2002 and 2005).
