Syracuse is ready to start the 2006 football season in the right way. Head coach Greg Robinson is excited about the team’s chances this season and looks for the offense to help lead the Orange to victories.
“I like the progress that we have made,” Robinson said. “I’m looking forward to seeing where we’re at. I really am. I think that we have worked extremely hard. I think that we are a better football team.
Robinson also addressed some staring issues on the offensive side of the ball. He announced starters on the offensive line and at the running back position but stressed that there will be multiple looks to each position.
“Eugene Newsome is going to start,” Robinson said. “Larry Norton will play in the football game. Marvin McCall is going to start at center but Justin Outten will play in the football game.”
“I believe that we will start Curtis (Brinkley),” Robinson said. “Like I said, all three could be there in the first quarter. I think that Curtis, he does a lot of things well. He is a good pass protector. He has a darting style of running. I think that he can make a person miss. He is quick to a hole. Paul Chiara, I think he run’s with power. He can accelerate. He has a burst about him and he is a good receiving back as well, good blocker. Delone (Carter) is a powerful back. He runs with strength. He can explode. He has a burst as well. He is developing in the passing game and shown that he can catch the football. All of them are good blockers and that is very important.”
Robinson also noted that the offense is improving as whole, led by staring quarterback Perry Patterson.
“I think that we’re more functional now,” Robinson said. “I think that Perry is much more functional now. I think that he has a much better grasp on what he is doing and I think that people around him do. So often it comes down to the quarterback, but if they are not protecting for him and if you can’t get open, then you have issues with that too. I just think that it is different now.”
Smith and the Orange open the 2006 season with an away game against Wake Forest on Sept. 2. The team then travels back to the Carrier Dome for the home opener against Iowa on Sept. 9. Season and individual game tickets are available via the internet and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (1-888-DOMETIX). To purchase tickets via the internet, click here.
