SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Two former Syracuse University student-athletes were two of six standouts to be inducted in the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame on Monday, Oct. 23. Paul Gait, a former lacrosse player at Syracuse from 1987-90, and Joe Schwarzer, a member of the SU basketball, football and baseball teams from 1915-1918, were inducted along with Dorsey Levens, Lee Burling, Glenn Donnelly and Frank Liles at a dinner at Drumlins Country Club.
Gait was a member of three straight national championship teams as a member of the Orange lacrosse team and was a three-time first-team All-American. He ranks 12th on SU’s all time points leaders list (212) and is 11th in career goals (127). A member of the NCAA 25th Anniversary Lacrosse Team, Gait was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame with his brother, Gary, in 2005.
Schwarzer was a two-time All-American at Syracuse and served as captain of the 1918 Helms Foundation National Championship team. On the gridiron, he was an All-American in 1918, playing on a team that went 8-1-1. The native of the Austro-Hungary Empire was named to the Syracuse All-Century Basketball team in 2005. Schwarzer passed away in 1989.
The six inductees increased the number of Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame members to 155.
