Former Syracuse student-athletes have not only succeeded during their collegiate careers, but they have been able to translate their success to the professional ranks. There are currently 35 NFL players that called Syracuse home during their college careers, including two players competing in the NFC West.
Running back Diamond Ferri is the newest member of the Arizona Cardinals. Ferri has also spent time on the New York Giants’ and Atlanta Falcons’ rosters. He spent the past summer as a member of NFL Europe’s Amsterdam Admirals. Ferri had 84 carries for 333 yards and two touchdowns to go along with seven receptions for 83 yards and 22 kickoff returns for 469 yards. He is one of six running backs competing for the Cardinals this season. A 2004 All-BIG EAST selection, Ferri finished his senior season with 99 tackles and led the team with four interceptions, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. He helped lead the Orange to the BIG EAST title with his performance in a crucial contest against Boston College. Ferri became the first player in BIG EAST history to garner Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors after he rushed for 141 and two touchdowns on 28 carries in addition to recording six tackles and returning an interception 44 yards for a touchdown on defense. He made 226 tackles during his college career, the eighth-most ever by a SU defensive back.
Tight end Alex Shor is also set to begin his first season with the Cardinals. Shor is one of six tight ends listed on Arizona’s roster. He made last eight catches for 88 yards last season with Syracuse. He also served as a key blocker for Damien Rhodes, who finished his career ranked ninth at SU with 2,461 rushing yards.
Syracuse will kick off the 2006 season with an away game against Wake Forest on Sept. 2. The team then travels back to the Carrier Dome for the home opener against Iowa on Sept. 9.
