Twenty-one former Syracuse football players were active on NFL rosters as the 2006 season opened on September 8, 2006. The NFL currently has twenty five Orange standouts on the rosters of eighteen teams. Will Hunter ’02, a cornerback for the Minnesota Vikings and Johnnie Morant ’03, a wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders kick off their season openers tonight. Hunter and the Vikings play the Redskins at 7 p.m. while Morant and the Raiders square off against the Chargers at 10:15 p.m.

Anthony Smith ‘06 had an impressive start to his NFL career with the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith, a free safety, had four tackles including three solo tackles in the Steelers 28-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare ’95 had a 26 yard field goal and was two for two in punt attempts. Miami cornerback Will Allen ‘00 recorded three tackles, including two solo in the loss to Pittsburgh.
Quarterback Donovan McNabb ’98 put up big numbers in the Philadelphia Eagles' 24-10 win over the Houston Texans. McNabb had 24 completions in 35 attempts, throwing for 314 yards including three touchdowns. Houston’s Morlon Greenwood ’00 recorded seven solo tackles and one assist in the loss to Philadelphia.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison ’95 was a force in the Colts win over the New York Giants. Harrison had nine receptions totaling 113 yards. Defensive end Dwight Freeney ’01 also contributed to the Colts victory, recording one tackle. Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck ’99 recorded five solo tackles and nine tackle assists.
In addition to Smith, recent SU graduates Quinn Ojinnaka, Ryan LaCasse, Steve Gregory and Joe Kowalewski are all spending their first professional seasons on NFL rosters. Ojinnaka is a offensive linemen for the Atlanta Falcons. LaCasse just completed his first week with the Indianapolis Colts, following a late preseason trade with the Baltimore Ravens. Gregory, a cornerback for the San Diego Chargers, and Kowalewski, a tight end with the New York Jets, are both on the practice squad.
James Mungro and Tebucky Jones are listed on the the depth charts of NFL teams but were both placed on injured reserve before the season began. Mungro is a running back for the Indianapolis Colts and Tebucky Jones is a strong safety for the New England Patriots.
