Albany, N.Y. – The Orange (3-11) lost its first match at the UAlbany Tournament, losing to the host Great Danes 3-1 (30-20, 30-26, 23-30, 30-21).
“The whole team picked up their game in the third game,” said assistant coach Carol Munger. “Emily (Kaier) and Cheryl (Cobbina) started hitting hard. Their middle blockers were tough to block and dig. We won the third game and put up a good fight in the fourth. Unfortunately, it went Albany’s way. It was good volleyball all around.”
Sophomore Emily Kaier set a career high with 17 kills to lead the Orange offense. Junior Cheryl Cobbina posted her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 14 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore April Quigley recorded a match-high 49 assists to go along with six kills. Junior Joscie Kaup registered a team-high 17 digs. Freshman Sarah Morton led the Orange with five total blocks.
The Great Danes jumped to an early lead in the first game and never looked back en route to the 10-point victory. In the second game, Syracuse led 24-23 only to see Albany score seven of the next nine point as the host team grabbed a two-game advantage. With the Orange up 20-19 in the third game, SU outscored Albany 10-4 to pull within one game. In the fourth game, the Great Danes led 22-20 and closed the match on an 8-1 as Syracuse lost its sixth-straight match.
Syracuse continues play at the UAlbany Tournament on Saturday, squaring-off against Middle Tennessee State at 10 a.m. and Temple at 5 p.m.
