Albany, N.Y. – Junior Cheryl Cobbina recorded 34 kills against Temple, tying a school record, but Syracuse lost both matches on the day, losing to the Owls 3-2 (34-32, 27-30, 30-27, 28-30, 15-13) and Middle Tennessee State 3-0 (30-20, 30-22, 30-23).
Cobbina tied the record held by Anne Parisien. Parisien recorded 34 kills against Villanova in 1991. Cobbina’s 65 attacks are also two shy of the school record. Andrea Carson totaled 67 attacks against Maryland in 1990.
“Cheryl really picked it up today,” said assistant coach Carol Munger. “Offensively, we really picked it up. In the third and fourth game, we started to dig the ball well. We lost but we still played better. We are improving. Kacie (MacTavish) picked her game offensively in the front row and dug the ball well while in the back row.”
In addition to her record-setting performance in kills, Cobbina added 15 digs against the Owls, three shy of her personal best. Freshman Kacie MacTavish set career highs with 16 kills and 13 digs while classmate Sarah Morton added a personal-best 11 kills. Sophomore April Quigley set career highs with 65 assists and 13 digs and junior Joscie Kaup led the team with 29 digs.
Each of the five games were closely contested throughout the match. Both teams had chances to win the first game before Temple closed it out and won 34-32. The Orange scored six of seven points in the second game to take a 26-20. Temple closed to within one but Syracuse was able to hold on for the 30-27 victory. The Orange rallied late from four-points down to tie the third game at 26 only to see the Owls respond and close out the game for a 2-1 advantage. Trailing for a majority of the fourth game, Syracuse ended the game on a 10-5 run and sent the match into a deciding fifth game. The Orange led 13-10 in the final game only to see Temple score the final five points and send Syracuse (3-13) to its eighth-straight defeat.
Against Middle Tennessee State, Cobbina led the team with 13 kills and added 10 digs. Freshman Kacie MacTavish led the team with 12 digs in addition to seven kills. Sophomore April Quigley recorded a team-high 17 assists while freshman Samantha Ainsworth added nine.
Syracuse resumes play on Friday, opening BIG EAST play against Louisville. The Orange will host the Cardinals at 7 p.m.
