MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Senior back Michelle Sola’s (Blandon, Pa.) goal was not enough as Syracuse dropped its 2006 season opener, 2-1, today to the Central Michigan Chippewas in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
“I didn’t think we came out particularly strong,” head field hockey coach Kathleen Parker said. “We did not play with the same confidence that we showed in our two exhibition games. Central Michigan set the tone during the first 20 minutes and we were unable to respond.”
SU (0-1) will remain on the road for the next three contests beginning with a match-up against Pennsylvania (at Delaware) on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 2:30 p.m.
Moyra Betuzzi and Samatha Sandham both scored to give Central Michigan a 2-0 advantage.
Sola got Syracuse on the scoreboard at the 55:32 mark when senior forward Ashley Fry (Oley Valley, Pa.) passed Sola the ball off a penalty corner.
Central Michigan outshot Syracuse, 19-15, for the game. The Chippewas held a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.), who played all 70 minutes, registered six saves. Chippewas goalkeeper Danielle Frank finished with five saves.
