Dome Opener Revisited
Saturday’s game against Miami (OH) is a rematch of one of the most significant contests in the history of Syracuse Athletics - the Carrier Dome opener. The Dome, which was constructed while the Orange played the 1979 season on the road, opened its doors for the first time on Sept. 20, 1980. Syracuse defeated the RedHawks that day, 36-24, behind a devastating performance by Orange legend Joe Morris. Morris rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns … He also returned a kickoff in the second half for a score. A crowd of 50,564 filled the stands, which remains the Dome attendance record. During the last 26-plus seasons, SU has played 156 football games in the building and holds a 104-50-2 Dome record.
Syracuse also won the only other meeting between the two schools. Don McPherson led the Orange to a 24-10 victory during Syracuse’s undefeated season of 1987. McPherson passed for 256 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another touchdown.
