
Harris Named Blue Ribbon Newcomer Of The Year

SYRACUSE, NY -- Freshman guard Paul Harris has been named college basketball's preseason Newcomer of the Year by Blue Ribbon Yearbook. The rookie from Niagara Falls High School and Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) played in the 2006 Michael Jordan All-American Classic and was named to the 2006 All-USA squad by USA Today.
Harris also played in the 2006 Nike Hoop Summit game between the USA Junior Select Team and the World Select Summit Team. The U.S. won the contest, 109-91, thanks in part to Harris' team-high seven rebounds.
He helped Niagara Falls to the 2005 New York State Class AA Championship. Harris accumulated 1,100 points, 730 rebounds, 286 assists and 115 steals in his two seasons as a starter.
The Yearbook had Syracuse as one of five BIG EAST Conference clubs in its preseason Top 25. The Orange were 24th on the list. Pittsburgh earned sixth, Georgetown was seventh, Connecticut placed 10th and Marquette 12th. The Yearbook had defending champion Florida in the top slot.
The Blue Ribbon All-America Team featured just two BIG EAST player s-- Pittsburgh's Aaron Gray and Marquette's Dominic James on the third team. The first team was comprised of Joakim Noah (Florida), Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), Glen Davis (LSU), Jared Dudley (Boston College), and Ronald Steele (Alabama).
The Orange begin practice on Friday, October 13.
