SU and Penn State Battle for 25th Time

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University field hockey team plays host to No. 8 Penn State on Wednesday, September 27 at 4 p.m. The Orange is coming off a 3-2 loss to Vermont on September 24 that dropped the Orange to 4-5.
SU rallied from a three-goal deficit, but could not come back in the loss to Vermont. Junior forward Jessica Lerew (York Springs, Pa.) and senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) scored for the Orange.
Penn State scored two unanswered goals later in the second half and held on for a 3-1 win over Michigan State on September 23.The win is the eighth straight for the Nittany Lions and improves their overall record to 8-2 on the year.
SERIES WITH PENN STATE
This is the 25th meeting between Syracuse and Penn State. The Nittany Lions hold a 22-1-1 advantage in the all-time series. The Orange dropped a 3-0 decision last year in University Park. The Orange took home a 3-2 overtime win last time Penn State traveled to SU in 2004.
CAREER FIRST
Freshman back Michelle Davis’ (Lititz, Pa.) goal against No. 12 Louisville on September 22 was the first of her career.
SEASON FIRST
Junior forward Jessica Lerew (York Springs, Pa.) scored her first goal of the year came off a rebound from a SU penalty corner against Vermont on September 24.
PERFECT
Senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) is a perfect 2-for-2 on penalty strokes. The senior converted against No. 12 Lafayette on September 10 and against Vermont on September 24.
STREAK
SU’s three-game longest is its longest since 2004 when the Orange also lost three consecutive. Syracuse last lost four consecutive in 2002.
BACK LINE
Three of Syracuse’s four goals last weekend came from the Orange’s back line. Freshman Michelle Davis (Lititz, Pa.) and senior Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) were the only two that found the back of the Cage for SU against No. 12 Louisville on September 22 and senior Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) scored one of the Orange’s goals against Vermont on September 24.

Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) has recorded a team-best six goals and 13 points. Senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) has registered a team-high four assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) has seen the majority of action in the cage for the Orange and has recorded a 2.49 goals-against-average and a .643 saves percentage.
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) is ranked 47th in the country in goals per game (.067). Senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) is third in penalty strokes (2.0). The Orange, as a team, are nationally ranked in six categories. SU is 44th in goals scored per game (2.0), 39th in goals-against-average (2.12), 43rd in won-lost-tied percentage (.444), 41st in assists (1.0), 27th in penalty corners per game (6.89) and 50th in points (5.0).
SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
Senior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) was honored as the Syracuse University Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of September 25. Ryan, who hails Lancaster, Pa., has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll on six occasions and was selected to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team three times. She is majoring in inclusive education and sociology.
SCOUTING PENN STATE
The Nittany Lions are led in scoring by Shaun Banta’s 10 goals and two assists for 22 points. Mallory Weisen has recorded a team-best seven assists. Reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Jen Beaumont has seen the majority action the cage for Penn State and currently leads the Big Ten in goals-against-average at 0.89, including five shutouts.
