SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University field hockey team returns home to host BIG EAST rival Georgetown on Sunday, October 1 at 1 p.m. The Orange is coming off a 1-0 overtime win at Massachusetts on September 29 that improved the Orange to 5-6. Live stats will be available on suathletics.com.
Senior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) scored the golden goal just four minutes into the overtime period. Ryan picked off a Minutewomen pass deep in the zone and put the ball past UMass goalkeeper Sarah Williams.
The Georgetown field hockey team won a 4-2 decision over Maryland-Baltimore County on September 26 at UMBC Stadium. It was the second-consecutive victory for the Hoyas who improved to 4-5 on the season. Two goals from freshman forward Lindsay Moramarco would give the Hoyas the edge.
SERIES WITH GEORGETOWN
This is the sixth meeting between Syracuse and Georgetown, but the first since 1994. The Orange hold a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series and have outscored the Hoyas, 20-1. SU is 1-0 all-time at Georgtown.
OVERTIME
Syracuse is now 2-1 in overtime games. The Orange lost at Delaware, 4-3, but defeated Rutgers, 3-2 and Massachusetts, 1-0.
GAME WINNER
Senior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) scored the game-winning goals at Massachusetts on September 29. It was her first game-winning goal of the season, second of her four-year career.
CAREER HIGH
Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) scored a career-high two goals against No. 9 Penn State on September 27. Babbitt, who had no goals in 2005, has five in 2006.
ORANGE LEADERS
Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) has recorded a team-best six goals and 13 points. Senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) has registered a team-high four assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) has seen the majority of action in the cage for the Orange and has recorded a 2.22 goals-against-average and a .633 saves percentage.
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) is ranked 47th in the country in goals per game (.067). Senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) is third in penalty strokes (2.0). The Orange, as a team, are nationally ranked in six categories. SU is 44th in goals scored per game (2.0), 39th in goals-against-average (2.12), 43rd in won-lost-tied percentage (.444), 41st in assists (1.0), 27th in penalty corners per game (6.89) and 50th in points (5.0).
SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
Senior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) was honored as the Syracuse University Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of September 25. Ryan, who hails Lancaster, Pa., has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll on six occasions and was selected to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team three times. She is majoring in inclusive education and sociology.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
The Hoyas are led in scoring by Maggie Farrand and Willemijn Wijsman who have both tallied eight points off three goals and two assists. Four different players have recorded a team-best three goals and three different players have registered a team-high two assists. Deirdre Crovo has seen the majority of action in the cage and currently holds a 3.14 goals-against-average and a .606 saves percentage.
