The Orange is coming off an impressive non-conference victory at Binghamton, 68-63, on Dec. 30. The Golden Eagles have won 12 consecutive games, including an 80-63 win at South Dakota in their last outing on Dec. 31. Syracuse, who has played 10 of its 14 games away from the Carrier Dome are 6-4 in those contests, including 1-0 in league games.
FABULOUS FRESHMAN
Freshman Nicole Michael recorded her fifth 20-plus point game with a 21-point performance in Syracuse’s 68-65 victory at Binghamton on Dec. 30. She also chipped in five rebounds, a career-high three steals, an assist and a block in the win. It was the 10th time in 14 outings this season that she as scored more than 15 points. Michael leads SU in points with 16.1 and rebounds with 8.6. Michael has registered at least 20 points and five rebounds in five of SU’s 14 games. She has led the Orange in scoring eight times, rebounding seven times, steals and blocks four times and assists three times. Michael is 11th overall and second for freshman in the BIG EAST in scoring and sixth overall and first for freshman in rebounding. She is also third overall and first for freshman in defensive rebounds at 6.14 per game. Michael’s five 20-plus point games rank tied for fifth on the BIG EAST charts. She has already earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades twice on Nov. 27 and Dec. 4 and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Brown Classic, hosted by Brown University on Dec. 2-3.
DOUBLE-DIGITS
Junior center Vaida Sipaviciute continues to play very well for the Orange. She extended her double-digit scoring streak to 11 games with 14 points in Syracuse’s 68-65 victory at Binghamton on Dec. 30. She also recorded a team-high six rebounds and one assist in the win. It was the first time all season that Sipaviciute has led the Orange in rebounding. Sipaviciute is first on the team in blocks per game at 1.9 and field-goal percentage, making 47.2 percent (75-159) of her attempts. She is second on the squad at 12.6 and third in rebounding at 5.0. She has led the Orange in blocks 11 times, scoring four times and rebounding once. Sipaviciute has scored in double-figures in 11 consecutive games and 12 of Syracuse’s 14 games this season. The 11 straight double-figures scoring games rank fourth on the BIG EAST charts. Sipaviciute is third in the BIG EAST and 43rd in the country in blocked shots. She is also 22nd in BIG EAST in scoring.
WELCOME BACK
Sophomore forward Lina Lisnere had a strong contribution in her first game of the season in Syracuse’s 68-65 victory at Binghamton on Dec. 30. She scored eight points, pulled down four rebounds and added three assists and a career-best four steals. She was 3-of-4 (.750) from the field and 1-of-2 (.500) from behind the 3-point line. Lisnere missed SU’s first 13 games of the season due to a foot injury. It was just the seventh game and fourth start of her career. Lisnere appeared in six games, starting three last season. She averaged 7.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in her six games in 2005-06. She has missed a total of 34 games due to injury, 21 last season and 13 this season.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
The No. 18/20 Marquette Golden Eagles (13-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) have won 12 consecutive victories including a 80-63 win at South Dakota on New Year’s Eve. Sophomore guard Krystal Ellis Behind scored a career-high 33 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor. She also dished a season-best seven assists, grabbed five steals and made all 10 of her free throws. Ellis scored 26 of her 33 points in the first stanza, and 15 of those 33 points were from three-point land. Collectively Marquette shot a season high 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from beyond the arc. Senior Christina Quaye followed with 16 points and eight rebounds. The Golden Eagles shot 48.0 percent for the game connecting on 24-of-50 attempts.
Ellis leads Marquette in scoring with 17.6, assists with 3.7 and steals with 2.8. Quaye leads the Golden Eagles in rebounding at 6.2. She is also averaging 14.1 points per game. Danielle Kamm has contributed 11.1 points per game.
Marquette’s 12 consecutive victories is the second longest winning streak ever and its 13-1 start to the season is the best record in program history. The Golden Eagles have won 11 straight home games dating back to last season. Marquette is 40-6 all-time at the Al McGuire Center.
THE SYRACUSE-MARQUETTE SERIES
This is the sixth meeting between Syracuse and Marquette. The Golden Eagles hold a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series. SU is 0-2 all-time at Marquette and 0-1 all-time against the Golden Eagles in BIG EAST Conference play. Marquette has won the last two meetings, including last season’s 71-57 BIG EAST win in Syracuse.
