Five former Syracuse student-athletes are six days away from reaching the pinnacle of professional football. Dwight Freeney, Marvin Harrison, Ryan LaCasse and Josh Thomas all hope to help the Colts win the Super Bowl on Sunday and are excited for the opportunity to play on the game’s grandest stage. Running back James Mungro is also a member of the Colts but is on injured reserve due to a preseason injury.

“There's nothing better,” Freeney said in a recent SI.com interview (Read the entire interview here). “I get goose bumps man. I just love going out there and representing. It's an unbelievable feeling. I'm already starting to picture what it's going to be like. Going out there and hearing the crowd. Hearing the boos from the Bears fans and hearing the cheers from the Colts fans. It's going to be a strange game because you're not at home so you're going to be hearing both fans. It's going to funny. I know I'm going to be loving it and I'm going to suck it up and take it all in and be one with the game.”
Freeney and the three other remaining Syracuse graduates are looking to bring the city of Indianapolis its first Super Bowl Championship. Last weekend, the Colts defeated their rivals, New England, to advance to the Super Bowl for the first time since the franchise moved to Indianapolis. The Colts recorded the greatest comeback in Championship Game history, overcoming a 21-3 deficit to win 38-34.
The four players have all contributed to the Colts success during the postseason. The defensive unit of Freeney, LaCasse and Thomas has played very solid football, allowing only 15 points per game to some of the most high-powered offenses in the league. Freeney has recorded five tackles, two sacks and three quarterback hurries and one forced fumble while Thomas has posted two tackles, one sack, one quarterback hurry and one fumble recovery during the postseason.
Harrison is one of the main targets on offense for Indianapolis. The All-Pro receiver has caught 10 passes for 134 yards during the postseason.
The quintuplet of former Orange standouts makes 30 former SU players that have participated in the Super Bowl. Syracuse, who has had at least one graduate participate in 14 of the last 16 championships, was last represented in the title game by Philadelphia quarterback in 2004. Tebucky Jones of New England was the last player that wore Orange to emerge victorious, helping the Patriots to a Super Bowl championship during the 2001 season.
