The first championship Marisa Gobuty won in basketball came in the fourth grade. She stills considers it to be one of, if not, the most memorable moments in her career.
“I got to score the winning basket, and it’s just a feeling that you can’t exactly describe,” Gobuty said. “It’s just that drive that’s kept me going forever.”
Emulating everything her sister did growing up, Gobuty started playing basketball in the second grade. Her sister quit early on, but Gobuty was hooked and remains playing to this very day. When she talks about basketball, she uses words like “passion” and “addictive” to describe her love and experience playing. These words and qualities she also found in Orange head coach Quentin Hillsman.
“I chose Syracuse because of Coach Q, hands down and he’s the most amazing coach,” Gobuty stated with a smile.
She brings to Syracuse an exciting career of international play that has brought much success in the past.
Her senior year at the IMG Academy she averaged 25 points, five assists and four rebound for the Pendleton Panthers. She also led her Israeli Team, the Elizur Holon, to back-to-back state championships in 2006 and 2007.
During her time at Syracuse, Marisa hopes to provide Orange fans and her teammates with something special.
“I’d love to see the team get as far as they can possibly go and win a championship,” Gobuty said. “Just do everything we can for the team, for the school, and especially for Coach Q.”
After graduation, her goals are various but one would have to believe her passion and drive will be put into any and all options.
“After graduation, I have to go to Israel first and do two years of army service, so I’d like to continue playing over there,” Gobuty said. “After that, I’d love to come back and become a doctor.”
