Senior Leadership: Cobbina, Kaup lead Orange in Sweep of Blue Demons

SYRACUSE – Senior Cheryl Cobbina powered the Syracuse offense with a team-high 13 kills and senior Joscie Kaup paced the Orange defense with a club-best 13 digs as SU captured its second consecutive win following a three-game sweep of DePaul on Friday night in the Women’s Building.
“The key for us tonight was how well we played in game two,” said second-year Syracuse assistant coach Carol LaMarche. “We put together a complete match tonight and that’s something we set out to accomplish.”
Sophomore Kacie MacTavish complimented the Orange offense with 11 kills as redshirt-junior April Quigley, who came two kills shy of a triple-double on Sunday against Georgetown, paced the SU attack with a squad-best 27 assists. Junior Brittany Kern and sophomore Sarah Morton tallied an identical six kills and five total blocks each.
Kaup, who surpassed former SU player Rachel Watson (1996-99) for the program’s all-time lead in career digs against Akron on September 1, collected the 2,000th digs of her Orange career in game one against the Blue Demons.
Behind a team-high four kills from MacTavish and three apiece from Cobbina, Kern and freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis, Syracuse set the tone for the evening with a 30-22 win in game one. Quigley totaled 12 assists as the Orange attack yielded a .455 hitting percentage.
Cobbina led the Orange offense with a club-best six kills in what LaMarche tabbed as the moment Syracuse put it into second gear with a 30-25 triumph in the second frame. The Orange stayed consistent and fired on all cylinders as six players collected at least one kill and the squad tallied a .395 attack clip in putting the Blue Demons on the brink of a sweep.
Head coach Jing Pu, in his 13th season with the Orange and now just five wins shy of his 400th career coaching victory, elected to place sophomore Samantha Ainsworth in the setter position for game three. Ainsworth guided the Orange with 10 assists and three kills before making way to Quigley for the match’s final touches.
Stanislovaitis, who posted eight kills in the match, recorded two critical kills down the stretch that provided Syracuse with a two-point cushion at 28-26. The Orange never looked back as it collected its sixth three-game sweep of the season at home and seventh overall.
The Orange (12-9, 3-3) continues its season-long eight-match homestand on Sunday against BIG EAST rival Notre Dame (7-8, 3-2) at 2:00 p.m in the Women’s Building.
