SYRACUSE – Senior Cheryl Cobbina powered the Orange offense with a team-high 17 kills and redshirt-junior April Quigley guided the SU attack with a club-best 54 assists in Syracuse’s 3-1 loss against Notre Dame on Sunday in the Women’s Building. Cobbina and Quigley tallied their ninth and sixth double-doubles of the season, respectively, after each totaled 11 digs against the Irish.
Sophomores Kacie MacTavish and Sarah Morton complimented the Syracuse offense with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Junior Brittany Kern and freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis each buried nine kills. The Orange attack totaled a .290 attack percentage versus the Fighting Irish’s .277 average. Morton paced the Orange with a .440 hitting clip.
Defensively, back-line stalwart Joscie Kaup, who claimed the 2,000th dig of her Syracuse career on Friday against DePaul, collected 17 digs. Kaup played in the 454th game of her Orange tenure against the Fighting Irish, cracking the program’s top 10 and ranking eighth all-time.
MacTavish added a team-leading 18 digs en route to her ninth double-double of the season. For the 16th time this season, and 11th consecutive, Morton led the Orange at the net with a team-high five total blocks. Morton’s 42 solo blocks in 2007 rank sixth on the Orange’s single-season chart.
As Syracuse has done so consistently in 2007, holding a 13-9 advantage against its opponents, the Orange captured game one with a 30-26 triumph. MacTavish and Kern powered Syracuse on the offensive end with six and five kills, respectively, on a combined 19 total attacks. Kaup’s team-high 10 digs kept Notre Dame outside hitter Adrianna Stasiuk and the Irish attack at bay. Syracuse built its largest advantage of the set to 19-11 following a service ace from Kaup.
The Orange trailed 28-22 before a Sarah Morton kill ignited a 6-0 run for Syracuse. Kern guided the Orange to a 28-28 tie with one service ace as the Fighting Irish committed four unforced errors. Following a Notre Dame time out, the teams traded kills before the Fighting Irish secured the win on an SU attack error, 31-29.
Notre Dame put the Orange in a 2-1 hole following a 30-24 win in game three. Cobbina, MacTavish and Morton each tallied four kills apiece to spear-head the Orange offense. MacTavish led the Syracuse defense with eight digs while Quigley totaled 15 assists.
Syracuse (12-10, 3-4) held an 18-12 lead in game four before the Fighting Irish ran off 13 of the next 17 points tallied to take a 25-22 advantage. Morton and MacTavish led the Orange attack with four kills as Notre Dame closed out the match with a 30-24 win and handed Syracuse just its second loss of the season at home.
The Orange remains on the Women’s Building hardwood for its fifth match of a season-long eight-match homestand on Saturday, October 20 at 2:00 p.m. against Marquette.
