SYRACUSE – Six Syracuse teams have completed more than half of their regular season schedules while the men and women’s swimming and diving squads began competition with the fall season in full-swing. The men and women’s cross country teams resumed action after a two-week hiatus at the National Open and the Pre-Nationals Invitational. The Orange field hockey program posted a 1-1 record following a convincing 5-2 win against Yale on Sunday. The men’s soccer team returned to the SU Soccer Stadium and collected its second BIG EAST win of the season after capturing a 1-0 shutout against Cincinnati on Saturday. The men and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the 2007-08 campaign with two wins at Colgate on Friday. The SU volleyball squad posted its second win in as many outings and tallied 1-1 record for the week after sweeping DePaul on Friday. The women’s soccer team began a four-game road trip over the weekend with a 0-1-1 finish, including a scoreless tie against Marquette on Sunday.
The men and women’s cross country teams returned to action on Friday and Saturday following a two-week hiatus. The Orange A women placed fourth at the National Open behind junior Nana Sang-Bender’s team-best ninth-place finish. The Syracuse B men placed 18th at the National Open. The No. 28 SU men, competing in a two-field meet against 25 nationally ranked teams, placed 13th out of 40 teams at the Pre-Nationals Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., the site of the 2007 NCAA Championship. Junior Jeff Scull paced the Syracuse attack with a 35th-place finish overall.

Orange freshman Maggie Befort and senior Brittany Angellella tallied two second half goals, but Providence held on for a 3-2 BIG EAST win on Friday. Junior goalkeeper Heather Hess tallied five saves against the Friars. Syracuse wasted no time in returning to its winning ways with a resounding 5-2 win on Sunday against Yale. Freshman Lelia Sacré collected six points on two goals and two assists, while senior Jessica Lerew posted two scores. Befort became the sixth player in program history to register three helpers in one game. Graduate Leigh Fawcett’s two assists move her into a tie for second place on the Orange’s single-season chart with 14. Syracuse’s 12 wins in 2007 are the most since the program collected 16 triumphs in 2001.

Sophomore Tom Perevegyencev’s goal with less than two minutes remaining propelled the Orange to a 1-0 shutout against BIG EAST rival Cincinnati on Saturday night at the SU Soccer Stadium. Perevegyencev’s fourth goal of the season, and first game-winner of his career, snapped Syracuse’s four-game slide. Junior netminder Robert Cavicchia posted five saves for his third shutout of the season. Cavicchia surpassed the 200-save plateau in his Syracuse career and moved into sixth place on the Orange’s all-time rankings with 13 career shutouts. Hansen Woodruff and Kenny Caceros led the Syracuse offense with a team-best three shots against the Bearcats.

Freshman Berk Kahraman tallied his first collegiate win in the 200 back. Syracuse swept the diving events behind freshman Corey Psoinos and sophomore Kirsten Thomas.

The Syracuse tennis team will resume action on Friday, October 19 at ITA Regional in Norfolk, Va. The Orange is coming off of season-opening tournament at the Billie Jean King Tournament. Sophomore Ashley Spicer collected her first win with the Orange in flight “D” singles. The freshmen doubles tandem of Emily Mauser and Christina Tan captured a Flight “B” victory.

The Syracuse volleyball team collected its second victory in as many outings following a 3-0 sweep against DePaul on Friday. Senior Cheryl Cobbina led the Orange offense with a team-best 13 kills while senior Joscie Kaup paced the SU defense with a club-leading 13 digs, including the 2,000th of her Syracuse career. Redshirt-junior April Quigley led the Orange with 27 assists. Syracuse captured game one, but couldn’t hold off Notre Dame from winning the next three on Sunday. Cobbina led the Orange with 17 kills while Quigley collected 54 assists. Sophomore Kacie MacTavish tallied 16 kills and sophomore Sarah Morton added 15. MacTavish led the SU defense with 18 digs while Morton tallied five total blocks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hatten tallied eight saves, including six in the second half, but a late South Florida goal propelled the Bulls to a 1-0 win against the Orange on Friday. Senior Lauren Jentzen led the SU offense with four shots. Syracuse played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Marquette on Sunday behind Bennett-Hatten’s seven saves and 11th career shutout.
