Senior defensive end Jameel McClain is one of 37 mid-season candidates for the 2007 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award. The list will be shortened to include five to six finalists in November and the final vote will take place on December 3rd. The winner will be announced on December 5th.
This season McClain is ranked 15th in the BIG EAST with 6.4 tackles per contest and fifth with 0.29 forced fumbles per game. He is averaging 3.5 tackles for loss and is second best on the team with 1.5 sacks this season. The team captain is 3.5 tackles for loss shy of the 10th spot on SU's career tackles for loss list.
McClain earned BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades after he increased his career sack total to 12, forced one fumble and intercepted the first pass of his career at Louisville. At Miami (OH), the Philadelphia, Pa., native became the first Orange student-athlete since Kelvin Smith (Miami OH, 2006) to block a field goal.
In his career, McClain has amassed 145 tackles, 19 for a loss, and three forced fumbles. He is tied with fellow Orange Tony Jenkins for ninth place on SU's career-tackles by a down lineman list.
McClain and the Orange host Buffalo Saturday (4 p.m., ESPNU). Click here to purchase tickets or call the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOMETIX). Fans are encouraged to use the 'Print at Home' ticket feature to avoid waiting in line at the Dome on game day.
