"We did a good job both mentally and physically in the game," said head coach Patrick Farmer. "We had some good chances in the first half and came out strong in the second half. We got the goal near the end and we played really well in the last five minutes."
Bergstrom's goal began when senior midfielder Jen Taormina, who leads the team with 14 points, handled a free kick from 25 yards out. She touched it to Bergstrom, who sent a left-footed shot around the wall. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Becker had trouble handing the shot before it crossed the goal line.
Bergstrom entered the game with a team-high 30 shots, but it only took one more to give the Orange its sixth win of the season – the most since SU registered eight victories in 2004.
The Orange defense held the Pirates to only five shots, none of which were on goal. SU finished with seven shots, including three on goal.
"Even though they didn't have a shot on goal Eliza (Bennett-Hattan) played very well," Farmer said. "It was slippery out there on the field turf and she did a great job of challenging their players and taking balls off their feet."
The sophomore goalkeeper now has six shutouts, matching her total from a year ago and placing her fourth on the school's single-season list. She is second on SU's career-shutout list with 12 blanks.
The Orange plays its eighth-consecutive BIG EAST game when it travels to Rutgers on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.
