Orange Hosts Colgate, Cornell in Non-Conference Twin-Bill

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse volleyball team, winners in four of its last five, welcome in-state rivals Colgate (4:00 p.m.) and Cornell (7:00 p.m.) to the Women’s Building for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, October 23. The Orange is coming off of back-to-back 3-1 wins against BIG EAST foe Marquette and Long Island.
Orange Rewind
Senior Cheryl Cobbina and sophomore Kacie MacTavish posted their team-leading 10th double-doubles of the season in a 3-1 win against Long Island on Sunday, October 21. Cobbina paired a team-high 19 kills with 11 digs while MacTavish totaled 10 kills and 10 digs. Redshirt-junior April Quigley guided the Orange attack with a club-best 45 assists. Defensively, senior Joscie Kaup’s 14 digs led five players with at least 10 digs while sophomore Sarah Morton collected a career-high seven solo blocks. Syracuse improved its record to 5-0 against teams from the state of New York.
Colgate (13-9, 8-1)
The Red Raiders invade the SU Women’s Building following 11 wins in their last 13 contests. Katrina Zawojski has powered the Colgate offense to the tune of a team-high 306 kills while Merryl Pohl has added 202. Meghan Fanta leads the Red Raiders attack with a team-high 800 assists. Jackie Adlam has tallied 356 digs while Casey Ritt leads the front-line with 68 total blocks.
Colgate is coming off of a 3-2 win against Patriot League foe Lafayette. Zawojski tallied a team-high 30 kills, ranking second all-time in single-match performances. Fanta contributed 70 assists as four Red Raiders tallied at least 10 kills and the offense totaled a .294 attack percentage. Adlam led the defense with 19 digs.
All-Time Against Colgate
In a series that dates back to 1973, Syracuse holds a convincing 42-9-2 series advantage, including 15 consecutive wins against Colgate. The Big Red has not captured a win against the Orange since 1995.
Last Time Against the Red Raiders
Syracuse collected the second victory of a four-game win streak with a 3-1 triumph against Colgate on Tuesday, October 3, 2006. Kacie MacTavish led the Syracuse offense with a team-high 17 kills while Cheryl Cobbina and Sarah Morton tallied 14. Syracuse totaled a .366 attack percentage as Samantha Ainsworth and April Quigley totaled 26 and 24 assists, respectively. Joscie Kaup led the back-line with 16 digs for the Orange.
Cornell (6-11, 3-4)
The Big Red takes on the Orange trying to rebound from five losses in its last seven chances. Katie Marshall leads the Cornell attack with a club-leading 223 kills while Erin McCarthy has added 165. The Big Red offense has run on the setting tandem of Hilary Holland and Amy Gordon. Holland paces the offense with 364 assists while Gordon has contributed 358. Megan Mushovic supports the Big Red defense with a team-high 367 digs while Emily Borman has 67 total blocks.
In Cornell most recent triumph, a 3-2 victory against Ivy League foe Dartmouth, Marshall’s 19 kills led four players for the Big Red with at least 10 kills. Gordon guided the Cornell attack with a club-best 45 assists. Mushovic tallied 42 digs while Juliana Rogers collected seven block assists.

In a series that dates back to 1974, Syracuse holds a 25-9-1 all-time advantage against Cornell. The Orange has bested the Big Red in 10 of the last 11 outings.
Last Time Against the Big Red
Cornell snapped a 10-match losing streak against the Orange with a 3-0 win on October 24, 2006. Kacie MacTavish powered the SU attack with a club-high eight kills while Sarah Morton added five. April Quigley guided the Syracuse offense with a team-best 15 assists. Defensively, Joscie Kaup matched MacTavish with a team-best seven digs.
