SYRACUSE – The Syracuse volleyball team ended a season-long eight-match homestand on Tuesday night with a pair of 3-1 wins against in-state rivals Colgate and Cornell in the Women’s Building. The Orange captured its fifth and sixth wins in the last seven outings and improved its record to a perfect 7-0 against teams from the state of New York.
“It was a great all-around effort tonight,” said second-year Syracuse assistant coach Carol LaMarche. “We did what we needed to do to win both matches and end a great homestand. We’re very proud of everyone’s performance.”
Redshirt-junior April Quigley guided the Orange offense with a club-best 57 assists while adding 13 digs against Colgate. The Warwick Valley, N.Y. native flirted with her first-career triple-double yet again after collecting seven kills. It marked the fourth time this season that Quigley has surpassed the 50-assist plateau.
Senior Cheryl Cobbina's club-leading 22 kills powered a Syracuse offense that totaled a .316 attack percentage. Cobbina was especially effective at the net in game two with the Orange trailing 25-20. The All-BIG EAST candidate tallied four momentum-swinging kills down the stretch and led SU to a 32-30 come-from-behind triumph.
Sophomore Kacie MacTavish, junior Brittany Kern and sophomore Sarah Morton reached double-figures with 15, 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Morton's .478 attack clip was a team-high for the Orange.
Senior Joscie Kaup paced the Syracuse defense with a team-leading 14 digs as sophomore Shanetha McLaurin added 13. MacTavish aided the Orange back-line with nine.
Head coach Jing Pu, in his 13th season with the Orange and now just one win shy of his 400th career coach victory, displayed the teams depth in the win against Cornell. Junior Brittany Kaier and sophomore Annabelle Pellerin charged the Syracuse offense with a season-high 10 kills.
Cobbina posted her 11th double-double of the season after leading the SU attack with 13 kills and adding a team-high 14 digs. Cobbina’s six total blocks, including four solo stuffs, led an Orange front-line that collected 20 total blocks.
Morton paired six total blocks with seven kills as MacTavish contributed nine kills and eight digs. Quigley guided the attack with a club-best 27 assists and Kaup totaled 11 digs.
Syracuse (16-10, 4-4) resumes BIG EAST action and will play its first match away from home in nearly a month at West Virginia on Saturday, October 27. First serve-receive with the Mountaineers is set for 2:00 p.m.
