SYRACUSE – The Orange volleyball team returns to the road for the first time in nearly one month for four critical BIG EAST matches starting with West Virginia at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27. Syracuse meets Pittsburgh on Sunday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m. Head coach Jing Pu, in his 13th-season with the Orange, stands on the cusp of a coaching milestone with 399 career coaching victories.
Head Coach Jing Pu
Syracuse head coach Jing Pu is in his 18th season overall as a volleyball mentor and 13th with the Orange. Pu’s head coaching career began in 1990 at the California University of Pennsylvania. He spent three seasons with the Vulcans, accumulated a convincing 86-31 record (.735) and was twice named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Following the ’92 season, Pu assumed the head coaching responsibilities at Central Connecticut State. In two seasons, Pu tallied a 53-21 record (.716) and received East Coast Conference Coach of the Year accolades. In 12-plus seasons with the Orange, Pu has totaled 260 wins and has twice been selected the BIG EAST Coach of the Year. The all-time winningest coach in SU volleyball history recorded his 250th victory with the Orange against Fordham on September 8, 2007.
Orange Rewind
The Orange completed a season-long eight-match homestand and collected its fifth and sixth wins in the last seven tries with a pair of 3-1 wins against Colgate and Cornell on Tuesday, October 23. Senior Cheryl Cobbina tallied 22 kills and redshirt-junior April Quigley posted a double-double with 54 assists and 13 digs in the win against the Red Raiders. In the nightcap, Cobbina led the Orange offense with 13 kills and added 14 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Quigley guided the attack with a team-best 27 assists as junior Emily Kaier and sophomore Annabelle Pellerin posted a season-high 10 kills apiece.
West Virginia (12-11, 3-6)
West Virginia welcomes the Orange to McDonough Gym looking to snap a brief two-match losing skid. The Mountaineers have their sights set on rebounding from losses against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh (3-0) and non-conference opponent Youngstown State (3-1).
Abby Tevis leads the West Virginia offense with a team-best 338 kills and a 3.76 kills per game average. Kailee Goold has guided the Mountaineers attack with a club-leading 915 assists. Defensively, Bonnie West has tallied a squad-best 394 digs while Lisa Hough has paced the play at the net with 78 total blocks.
In the Mountaineers’ 3-0 win against Georgetown, Tevis tallied a team-best 17 kills while Goold added 41 helpers. West’s 11 digs led three players for WVU with at least 10 digs.
All-Time Against West Virgina
In a series that dates back to 1985, West Virginia holds a 13-8 against Syracuse despite four straight losses. The Orange posted a 3-1 win against the Mountaineers in 2006.
Last Time Against the Mountaineers
The Orange captured its second of a three-match win streak with a 3-1 triumph against West Virginia on Friday, October 20, 2006. Joscie Kaup’s team-high 27 digs moved her into sole possession of second-place all-time. Kacie MacTavish posted a double-double with a career-best 23 kills while adding 20 digs. Cheryl Cobbina tallied 22 assists as April Quigley led the attack with 49 assists.
Pittsburgh (13-10, 6-3)
Pittsburgh hosts the Orange as winners in eight of its last 11 tries, including a perfect 5-0 mark at home in Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers stand deadlocked with Villanova for third place in the BIG EAST standings and are looking to build off of a 3-0 win against West Virginia.
The Panthers’ offense has been led by Diana Andreyko’s 340 kills and Kelly Campbell’s 318 kills. Emily Burke has guided the Pitt attack with a club-leading 804 assists. Michelle Rossi paces the Panthers’ defense with 408 digs while Meagan Dooley has tallied 99 total blocks.
In Pitt’s win against WVU, Andreyko and Jessica Moses tallied a combined 24 kills while Burke added a club-best 41 assists. Moses led the Panthers’ defense with seven total blocks and Rossi totaled 21 digs.
All-Time Against Pittsburgh
In a series that dates back to 1982, Pittsburgh holds a 28-6 all-time advantage against Syracuse. However, the Orange is currently riding a two-match winning streak.
Last Time Against the Panthers
Syracuse capped a three-match win streak with a thrilling 3-2 victory against Pittsburgh on October 22, 2006. Cheryl Cobbina paced the SU offense with a team-high 27 kills while Kacie MacTavish tallied a double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs. April Quigley set a career-high with 72 assists. Joscie Kaup’s 33 digs was a then-Syracuse program-record. The Orange’s 134 total points, 87 kills and 80 assists against the Panthers marked new program highs.
