NEW YORK – Former Orange basketball standout and 2006-07 Honorable Mention All-America selection Demetris Nichols (2003-07) has signed a contract with the New York Knicks, President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Isiah Thomas announced.
Nichols was acquired in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Knicks after being selected with the 53rd pick overall by the Portland Trail Blazers.
The 6-8 forward averaged 15.6 points on 52.6 percent shooting in five games as a member of the Knicks in the 2007 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
Nichols earned first-team All-BIG EAST distinction after leading the conference with an 18.9 points per game average. Nichols paced the Orange last season in scoring average, three-point baskets (100), three-point field goal percentage (.417) and free-throw percentage (.850). The Boston, Mass., native received all-district honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the United States Basketball Writers of America (USBWA).
Syracuse and Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim begin the 2007-08 season in the Carrier Dome against Siena (7:00 p.m.) as part of the Dick’s Sporting Goods Preseason National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
