The Orange football squad will host #13/12 West Virginia in a battle for the Schwartzwalder Trophy today (12:00 p.m., ESPN Regional). In one of the oldest and richest rivalries in Syracuse football history, the clubs will vie for the coveted Schwartzwalder Trophy, which has gone to the winner of the annual pairing since 1993. The trophy is named for the Hall of Fame coach who guided the Orange to a 153-91-3 record in 25 seasons (1949-73). He is SU's all-time winningest coach and led the Orange to its only football national championship in 1959. Schwartzwalder started at center for West Virginia under the great Mountaineers coach Greasey Neale and graduated from WVU in 1933.
Prior to the game, cheer on the Orange during the Quad Walk at 9:50 a.m. on the University Quad. Immediately after the Orange Quad Walk, legendary rock band Orleans will entertain the crowd with a pre-game concert. From “Still the One” to “”Dance with Me” to the recent “Dancing in the Moonlight,” Orleans is marking their 35th year of making their original brand of music with this pre-game concert that also celebrates its first free concert on the University Quad – a performance for Syracuse’s incoming freshmen in 1972. Orleans will also perform the National Anthem in the Carrier Dome prior to kickoff.

Legends Day
Twenty years ago, quarterback Don McPherson pitched the football to tailback Michael Owen, who crossed the goal line for a two-point conversion to defeat the Mountaineers and preserve the perfect 11-0 record. More than 40 members of that team will be on-hand and recognized during Saturday's game. Two of the '87 leaders, McPherson and defensive lineman Paul Frase, will be honorary captains and participate in the Quad Walk, address the team before the game and accompany Jameel McClain and Taj Smith for the coin toss.
Orange – Mountaineers Series
Since 1993, the two schools have been battling for the coveted Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy. The trophy is named for the Hall of Fame coach who guided the Orange to a 153-91-3 overall record in 25 years. As a student-athlete, Schwartzwalder started at center for West Virginia and graduated from WVU in 1933.
The Orange leads the overall series 30-24. The series dates back to 1945, which SU won, and the two teams have met every year since 1955. Eight games have been decided by seven points or less with Syracuse holding the edge, 11-7, in those contests.
Creating Turnovers
Two interceptions by senior safety Joe Fields and one by junior safety A.J. Brown increased SU's season turnover total to 10. In 28 games under head coach Greg Robinson the Orange has forced at least three miscues 14 times. For the season, the Orange has a +1.0 turnover ratio, which is tied for 18th among Football Bowl Subdivision teams.
Wide Receiver Weapons
The duo of junior Taj Smith and sophomore Mike Williams has produced 602 of SU's 1,160 receiving yards and has caught six of the team's eight receiving touchdowns. Smith leads the club with 342 yards on 19 catches, while Williams has accumulated 260 yards on 16 receptions. Both receivers have three touchdown catches.
Jones Ranks Nationally
Sophomore defensive tackle Arthur Jones is tied for sixth nationally with 1.7 tackles for loss per game. Through five games he has amassed 8.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a total of 20 yards lost. At Miami (OH) he made a career-best three stops behind the line of scrimmage, including his first sack of the year.

Donate Old Cell Phones for the Military
In honor of military families in Central New York and around the world, AT&T will be collecting used cell phones this weekend at the AT&T information booth on the University Quad during the pre-game festivities. The used cell phone drive will benefit Cell Phones for Soldiers, a non-profit organization that uses proceeds from recycled cell phones to provide prepaid phone cards to U.S. Military families whose loved ones are serving overseas.
In addition to AT&T’s phone drive at the pre-game tailgate on the Quad, old cell phones can also be dropped off at any of AT&T’s company-owned retail locations in the greater Syracuse area. AT&T has been collecting used wireless devices for Cell Phones for Soldiers since early this summer and their stores will continue to serve as drop-off points for the remainder of the year.
