All fans who purchase a full-priced ticket ($36) between November 11th and November 24th to the Cincinnati game will receive a free ticket to the Syracuse men’s basketball game against Massachusetts on Wednesday, November 28 (prior sales excluded). Any college student who will be in the Upstate New York area for the holiday can purchase a ticket for just $17 with their college ID to sit in the Syracuse University student section for the Cincinnati game. Also, this football game is Senior Citizen and Youth Day, therefore tickets for all senior citizens (60 and older) and youth (12 and under) are just $12.
Tickets are available online (click here) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOMETIX). Fans are invited to use the ‘Print at Home’ ticket feature on the internet to avoid waiting in lines on gameday.
During halftime of the football game, the Syracuse Eight Courage Award will be presented to Syracuse’s NCAA Gymnastics Champion Sidney Oglesby. The first African-American to win an NCAA title, Oglesby was a three-time ECAC Champion and participated in an AAU sponsored gymnastics tour of Africa. He was one of 18 African-American student-athletes attending Syracuse at the time. Oglesby continues to be an active member of the Syracuse community, as an elected official on the Syracuse Common Council and the Onondaga County Legislature, and serves on numerous community organization boards. In 1998 he became the first African-American to serve as Democratic floor leader for the County Legislature. He currently serves as Commissioner of Jurors for Onondaga County and is vice president of the New York State Commission of Jurors Board.
The Syracuse Eight Courage Award, established in 2006, is presented annually to a current or former student-athlete who has overcome a socially, economically or otherwise disadvantaged background or serious injury and has demonstrated uncommon bravery or highly principled behavior in the face of adversity. It is awarded to that student-athlete, regardless of race, color or gender, whose actions, like the actions of the men in whose honor this award is being made, both reflect these values and a commitment to sportsmanship and academic achievement.
In October, 2006, the University honored the Syracuse Eight, who is a group of African-American student-athletes who had the courage to stand up for their convictions. To honor these brave men and the important contributions they made in the university quest to achieve diversity and understanding, the athletic department has created the award of courage.
Williams Returns as Honorary Captain
Williams Returns as Honorary Captain
As the final honorary captain this season, Williams will represent the great tradition of Syracuse football by addressing the team before the game and accompanying captains Jameel McClain and Taj Smith for the coin toss.
Williams was a four-year letterwinner at Syracuse from 1994 to 1997. During his senior year, he was selected to the All-BIG East Second Team and was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll four semesters at SU.
After completing his college career, Williams was selected in the fourth round of the 1998 NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams. He played three seasons with the team and earned a Super Bowl ring during the 1999 season. In 2001, Williams was traded to the Oakland Raiders, where he had his most productive season (33 catches for 298 yards and three touchdowns). After leaving Oakland in 2002, he had a stint with Tampa Bay in 2003 only to return to the Raiders in 2004 where he was nominated for NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. Williams finished his career in 2005 with St. Louis. His career totals included 114 receptions for 1,004 yards and 13 touchdowns.
More impressive than his accomplishments on the field is Williams' ability to give back. The Rochester native is the founder of the Roland Williams Youth Lifeline Foundation. The program is a national non-profit organization that uses the influence of athletics and entertainment to support life skill development for middle and high school disadvantaged youth. Its mission is to provide necessary tools and supplies to at-risk youth for long-term development and sustained productivity.
At SU, he coordinated Jam Session in 1999 and 2000, which benefited the Boys and Girls Club of Syracuse. He also represented Syracuse at the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in May 1997.
