The Orange football team returns to the gridiron after a two-week hiatus to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers in Heinz Field today(12:00 p.m., ESPN Regional). The game is the first of four consecutive BIG EAST contests to wrap up the regular season. Syracuse holds a 30-29-3 advantage in a series that dates back to 1916.
Fans in Upstate New York can watch the ESPN Regional broadcast live on Time Warner Sports or listen to the Syracuse ISP Sports Network, TK-99.5 FM broadcast. Fans can also hear the broadcast through Orange All-Access and on Sirus Satellite Radio.
More on the series
The two teams have met 61 times and the Panthers are riding a three-game winning streak against the Orange. Syracuse, however, has won six of the last eight games played in Pittsburgh. In 1996, SU routed Pittsburgh (55-7) to record its 600th win in program history. The 2000 contest marked the first multiple overtime game for the Orange and its first extra-session win (24-17).
Syracuse has gone big against the Panthers. In 1959, Dan Reackiewicz intercepted a Pittsburgh pass and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. It’s the longest interception return in school history. In 1965, Floyd Little recorded the longest punt return in Orange history when he ran one back for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Off to the Races
The Orange rushing attack had its most effective showing of the year in its win against Buffalo. Freshman Doug Hogue had a career-high 24 carries for a career-best 83 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Andrew Robinson showed another side of his offensive prowess when he rushed nine times for a career-high 62 yards. As a unit, the offense ran a season-high 70 plays for a total of 444 yards and piled up 26 first downs, 13 of which came on the ground.
D-Fence
Senior free safety Joe Fields leads the Orange with 68 tackles, including 37 solo. Junior middle linebacker Jake Flaherty and senior defensive end Jameel McClain are behind Fields with 58 and 52 tackles, respectively. Having one of the most stellar seasons by an Orange defensive tackle, sophomore Arthur Jones has already racked up 14.5 tackles for a loss totaling 29 yards.
Loooooooooong Drives
Syracuse has recorded two scoring drives of 80-yards or more this season. Both have come in the last two outings. SU’s first touchdown drive against Buffalo covered 99 yards on seven plays and was the longest in the Greg Robinson Era. The Orange also had an 80-plus yard scoring drive against Rutgers. It covered 84 yards on seven plays and gave SU a 14-0 lead.
