
Durand And Flaherty Earn Academic All-District Honors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange football student-athletes junior guard Ryan Durand and junior linebacker Jake Flaherty were named First-Team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District on Thursday. The honor is the first for both gridironers, who will now be placed on the national ballot.
Durand, a Leominster, Mass., native, was a 2005 and 2006 BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection and has made Syracuse University Dean's List and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester. The health and exercise science major returned to the field at Pittsburgh after missing the Buffalo contest with an ankle injury. He had started 19 consecutive games before his absence against the Bulls. Durand is a candidate for several national awards, such as the National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete of the Year and the 2007 Outland Trophy (best offensive lineman.) The junior is a regular at community events, including speaking at elementary schools, visiting patients at the Children's Hospital, providing guidance to incarcerated youth at the Justice Center and visiting senior citizens at the Ida Benderson Senior Center and the Nottingham Retirement Home.
Flaherty, who is majoring in American studies, was named to the 2005 and 2006 BIG EAST All-Academic Team and has made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll five times. The Wakefield, R.I., native is second on the team with 69 tackles and ranks 12th in the BIG EAST with 7.7 tackles per game. At Pittsburgh, he matched a career-high 11 tackles, including 2.0 for loss and his first-career sack. His involvement in the community includes the 'Cuse Cares Community Program, visiting patients at the Children's Hospital, speaking at the Rotary Club, participating in the WCNY Kids Fest and visiting the St. Leo's Cantor and senior citizens at the Ida Benderson Center.The Orange hosts South Florida on Saturday, Oct. 10 (12:00 p.m., ESPN Regional).
