SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman forward Donte’ Greene leads all scorers with 16 points as Syracuse holds a commanding 40-25 advantage against Colgate at halftime in the Carrier Dome. Junior center Arinze Onuaku has totaled 11 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Syracuse opened the game with an early 5-0 run and never again peered in the rear-view mirror. After the Raiders responded with a 5-0 run to even the score, the Orange answered with a 15-2 spurt, supplying the hosts with a controlling 20-7 advantage.
Greene shot 5-for-7 from the field, including a 2-for-4 display from beyond the arc, as Syracuse posted a 53.8 percent shooting clip. Onuaku shot 4-for-5 from the floor, missing just his first field goal attempt in the last three games. Onuaku and Greene powered an Orange 24-8 edge in points in the paint.
Syracuse’s success can be directly attributed to the team’s defensive effort. The Raiders entered the game shooting 45.8 percent from three-point range, ranking fourth nationally. Colgate shot a paltry 9-for-27 overall and just 2-for-8 from long range.
Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim installed a full-court man-to-man press set midway through the first half to complement his trademark 2-3 zone defense.
Junior guard Kyle Roemer, averaging a team-best 19.2 points per game at tonight’s onset, led the Raiders with seven points.
