The women's basketball team, which is off to its best start since 1981-82, tries to improve on its 8-1 record when it welcomes Maryland Eastern Shore to the Carrier Dome on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game. The Orange received three votes in this week's AP poll, tabbing SU at No. 41 in the country. Syracuse's last appearance in the AP poll was on March 4, 2002 when it received two votes.
Live video of the outing can be seen on suathletics.com via Orange All Access. The game can be heard on WTLA 1200/1440 AM and through Orange All Access. 2004 SU graduate Brian Higgins will call the action. Student radio WJPZ 89.1 FM will also cover the game.
The Orange will use the momentum of a seven-game winning streak to try and go to 9-1 for the first time since the 1978-79 season, which SU began 12-1. In the 36-year history of the program, the Orange has only won eight consecutive games three times (1978-79, 1976-77 and 1974-75).
At home this season SU is 3-0 with wins against Lehigh (61-54), Penn State (72-53) and Northeastern (79-46). The Orange averaged 70.7 points during those games, while limiting its opponents to only 51.0 points. Junior guard Chandrea Jones is averaging a double-double with 14.3 points and 11.3 rebounds. In the Dome (against Penn State and Northeastern) she is averaging 16.5 points and 12.0 rebounds.
Five players are averaging in double figures in the Carrier Dome and behind Jones is freshman guard Erica Morrow, who has 12.0 points per outing. Sophomore guard Nicole Michael is third with 11.5 points per game and senior forward Fantasia Goodwin and sophomore forward Vionca Murray each have 10.0.
SU is averaging 26.0 more points (75.5-49.5) than its opponents in the Dome by shooting 48.7 percent from the floor, including 44.8 percent from the arc, while its competition is posting 30.8 from the field, including only 14.0 percent from three-point range.
Jones and Goodwin lead the team with 14.9 and 13.7 points per game, respectively, and both have been honored by the BIG EAST Conference. Jones was named to the weekly honor roll after back-to-back double –double performances in the Orange's 72-53 win against Penn State and 79-46 victory against Northeastern. Goodwin earned weekly honor accolades twice. The first came after averaging 18.3 points and 9.7 rebounds in three victories, including the Warhawk Classic Championship. More recently, she was named to the honor roll on Dec. 17 for her double-double at Princeton. She posted 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Maryland Eastern Shore enters with a 4-3 record and is riding a two-game winning streak. April McBride, the Dec. 10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week, leads the team with 13.9 points and 6.9 rebounds. Casey Morton was also recognized by the Mid-Eastern Conference on Dec. 10 as Rookie of the Week. She, along with Tiffany Reid, is averaging in double-figures. Morton has posted 10.6 points per game and Reid has registered 13.0 points per outing.
