SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior forward Fantasia Goodwin set an Orange single-game standard by grabbing 25 rebounds in Syracuse’s 81-35 win against Saint Peter’s on Saturday in the Carrier Dome. Goodwin also added 17 points en route to her third consecutive double-double and sixth of the season.
Goodwin, who had 12 points and 14 rebounds in the first half, eclipsed Sue Scholl’s record of 24 rebounds against Rochester on Jan. 30, 1978.
As a team the Orange came one rebound away from tying the school record of 68 rebounds in a game, which was accomplished against Rider on Dec. 18, 1993. The Orange has amassed 124 rebounds in two games – it grabbed 57 against Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 19.
The Orange has won nine straight games for only the second time in school history and is 10-1 on the season. The only other 10-game streak came in 1974-75 when SU went a perfect 10-0.
Syracuse scored more than 80 points for the second consecutive contest and third time this season and had five players in double-digits for the second straight outing with Goodwin leading the way.
Sophomore forward Nicole Michael registered her second double-double in a many games and 12th of her career with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Freshman forward Erica Morrow and junior guard Chandrea Jones each tallied 13 points and sophomore forward Vionca Murray had a career-high 12 points.
The Orange limited the Peahens to only 23.2 percent shooting (13-56) and held its leading scorer senior forward Lauma Reke, who is averaging 15.2 points per game, to nine points.
Syracuse, which has won five straight at home for the first time since 2001-02, shot 42.0 percent (29-69) and connected on 74.1 percent (20-27) of its free throws. The Orange has shot 40.0 percent or better in the last seven contests.
A hoop by Michael and two baskets by Jones gave SU an early 6-0 lead at 18:43. The Peahens pulled within two (6-4) at 16:04, but Syracuse erupted for a 17-2 run over 5:51 to grab at 23-6 advantage.
Morrow and Goodwin each produced six points during the streak. Nifty passing from freshman guard Tasha Harris, who had a team-high six assists, highlighted the run when she found Goodwin under the hoop twice. Their first connection at 11:38 moved the score to 19-6 and forced Saint Peter’s to burn a timeout.
Goodwin was at it again when she scored six straight during a 14-0 Orange run that lasted from 7:32 to 3:32. The streak was capped when Harris found a wide open Goodwin under the hoop to move the Orange ahead 39-10.
Five consecutive points, including a three point play by Murray and a basket by Morrow gave the Orange a 44-13 lead at the break.
Syracuse made 42.9 percent (18-42) of its shots in the first half, while limiting Saint Peter’s to only 24.0 percent (6-15).
A 10-0 run between 16:37 and 14:01 of the second half gave the Orange a 60-19 advantage. Morrow connected on SU’s first three-pointer during the span.
Jones added a three-pointer just over four minutes later, but it was the Orange’s dominance down low that helped earn the 46 points margin of victory. SU scored 36 points in the pain and had 29 second-chance points. The Peahens tallied 12 points in the key and only five second-chance points.
The Orange outrebounded the Peahens 67-24 by grabbing 20 more offensive and 23 more defensive boards. SU is 10-0 when pulling down more rebounds than its competition.
Saint Peter’s goes to 6-4 and were led by Reke’s nine points and four rebounds. Junior guard Tania Kennedy and senior forward Petagay Douse each added seven points.
Syracuse returns to action and the Carrier Dome when it hosts Sienna on Friday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m.
