PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior center Arinze Onuaku has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday. Onuaku averaged 17.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per contest while shooting 62 percent from the floor in a 1-1 week for the Orange.
Onuaku’s first-career double-double came following a career-best 20 point, 10 rebound effort in Syracuse’s 107-100 loss to Massachusetts on November 28. The 6-9 center shot 7-for-10 from the field in 34 minutes of action.
Onuaku wasted no time in posting his second-career double-double after tallying 14 points and a career and team-high 16 rebounds in Syracuse’s 73-60 win against Tulane. His inside presence, with sophomore Paul Harris’ 10 boards, paced the Orange to a 47-33 rebounding edge against the Green Wave. Onuaku grabbed a career and club-best eight offensive rebounds, leading SU to 24 second chance points.
In seven starts this season in the middle for the Orange, Onuaku is one of five SU starters averaging double-figures. The junior center, who is shooting a team-high 59 percent from the field, is third on the team with 13.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.
Syracuse (5-2), after playing five of its first seven contests at the Carrier Dome, returns to the road for a non-conference battle with ACC foe Virginia (6-1) on Wednesday, December 5. The Orange and Cavaliers meet at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
