Orange at the BIG EAST
The Syracuse swimming and diving team will take part in the 2007 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship, at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in Uniondale, N.Y., Feb. 14-17. Syracuse is sending 14 men and 11 women to compete in the four day event against swimmers and divers from 12 other BIG EAST schools.

Senior Luk Boral looks to continue his dominance at the BIG EAST meet. Boral won the 200 breast as a freshman and sophomore, placed second last season, and has swam at the NCAA Championship in the event in each of those years. He posted the seventh-fastest time in the 200 breast in the conference this season. He will also swim in the 100 breast and the 200 IM. He is one of seven Syracuse swimmers who will compete in three individual events as well as relays. Freshman Alex Taraskin will attempt to continue his extraordinary first season with the Orange in the 200, 500, and 1,650 free events. Fellow freshmen Kevin Alland, Ryan Corcoran, Arda Isiksalan, Glenn Kalata, and Moshe Kohen will all be making their first splashes at the conference meet.
All nine members of the women's swimming team and two divers will represent the Orange this weekend. Seniors Randi Beaulieu, Annette Hoye, and Petra Zavadilova are at the meet for the final time. Beaulieu has scored points at BIG EAST in each of her first three seasons, while Hoye will compete in the 100 breast for the third-straight season. Zavadilova swam in two individual events and three relays last year, her first at Syracuse. Graduate student Alida DiPlacido is one of the premiere divers in the BIG EAST. DiPlacido, a three-time All-American and two-time BIG 12 champion while at Texas A&M, has the top scores on both boards in the BIG EAST this season. Freshmen Carolyn Delkus, Masha Glukhova, and Katelyn Schumacher are all experiencing the conference championship for the first time.
This is the 28th BIG EAST Championship meet for the men and the 25th for the women. Syracuse's men's squad has won three BIG EAST team titles and has finished in the top three 13 other times. The women's team is seekings it first BIG EAST title, but has placed in the top three six times. Last season, the men came in eight place and the women finished ninth.
The BIG EAST Championship consists of 40 overall events, including 28 individual swimming events, eight relays and four diving events. The men and women compete in each event separately and are scored as a team. Each individual is allowed to compete in three events and any of the relays the school has qualified for. For all individual events, preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. with the finals to follow at 5:45. All relays are timed final events in the evening sessions.
The NCAA Championships will be held at the University of Minnesota. The women's meet is March 8-10 and the men's meet is March 15-17. The Zone A Diving Meet for both the men and women will be held at Rutgers, March 1-3.
