SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s lacrosse team split a pair of scrimmages on Sunday, Feb. 4 at the Carrier Dome. SU defeated Hofstra, 10-8, in its first contest and lost, 9-8, to reigning Division II national champion Le Moyne in its second outing. The first scrimmage consisted of two 15-minute regulation periods and a third period of running time. For the Syracuse-Le Moyne match, the two teams played three 15-minute regulation periods.
The Orange reeled off the last two goals in its first game to post a 10-8 victory against the Pride. Sophomore Greg Niewieroski scored the winner off a feed from Mike McDonald, and freshman Max Bartig tallied an unassisted insurance goal to end the game’s scoring. Bartig and Niewieroski each finished with a pair of goals as did sophomore Kenny Nims.
Junior Mike Leveille and sophomore Dan Hardy paced the Orange with three points each against the Pride. Leveille notched two goals and a helper and Hardy finished with a goal and two assists.
Both teams scored twice in the opening period, but the Orange netted three of the first four scores in the second period to take a 5-3 advantage. Bartig’s first goal of the contest capped the scoring spree. The Pride rallied back though, scoring the final two goals of the frame to tie the game at 5-5 going into the last period.
Hofstra’s Dan Stein opened the final stanza with a score, but a goal by Brendan Loftus and a tally by Nims made it 7-6 Orange. Zachary Heygl and Max Cohen each tallied Hofstra goals sandwiched around another Nims score to square the match at eight goals apiece down the stretch.
Sophomore goaltender Peter Coluccini played the first two periods and made six saves. Senior Casey Rotella played the third frame and stopped four shots.
Against Le Moyne, the Orange rallied from an 8-5 deficit with three consecutive scores in the third quarter to tie the game at 8-8. Nims had two goals in the spurt and Leveille had the other. The Dolphins possessed the ball for the majority of the final four minutes though with Ed Street scoring the winner. Le Moyne won the ensuing face-off and continued to kill the clock. A last-second heave by the Orange was batted down.
SU owned a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by graduate student Greg Rommel and Leveille. The Dolphins got scores from Street and Nick Gatto at the beginning of the second frame to claim a 3-2 margin. With the score tied, 4-4, Le Moyne gained control of the contest, tallying four of the next five goals, including two goals by Andrew Carducci, to go up 8-5.
Nims led the Orange with four points against the Dolphins and finished the day with four goals and two assists. Leveille netted a hat trick versus Le Moyne and also had six points on the afternoon.
Coluccini again played the first two periods, making three saves. Freshman Al Cavalieri made his debut between the pipes in the final period against Le Moyne and stopped three shots.
Le Moyne finished the day 2-0. The Dolphins also won their first match, beating Hofstra, 12-5.
Syracuse will play its final preseason scrimmage on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Navy. The Orange opens the regular season against Hobart on Sunday, Feb. 18.
