SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Several members of the Orange men’s lacrosse team donated their time to help grow the game of lacrosse on Thursday, March 15. Greg Rommel, Evan Brady, Mike Leveille, Steve Panarelli, Steven Brooks, Peter Coluccini, Dan Hardy and Greg Niewieroski spent the morning at Morgan Road Elementary School in Liverpool helping third graders build and string their own lacrosse sticks.
The players also answered questions, signed autographs, and posed for pictures. As part of the presentation, Alfred Jacques, a lacrosse expert from the Onondaga Nation, spoke about the history of lacrosse and introduced the students to other early Native American games such as Snow Snake and Double Ball.“It’s great to see the interest in lacrosse,” Coluccini said. “I wish I had an opportunity growing up to have lacrosse players come in, teach a little bit about the sport, and help string sticks. It’s great to be able to help put a smile on these kids’ faces.”
The event was organized by Morgan Road principle Fred Fowler and also involved third-grade students from the Onondaga Nation through the school’s exchange program.
“Our character education initiative is to live in balance and harmony with all living things and out of that came the
idea to try and do something with the Onondaga Nation,” Fowler said. “Then it evolved into connecting with them through social studies and design technology, which is what we did today. Our third grade is studying Native American culture and what better way to connect than through lacrosse and Mr. Jacques.”

“The SU players were great. I can’t say enough about their enthusiasm. They were here sawing, sanding, and participating with students. The kids were so excited when I told them guys from the Syracuse team were coming because they’ve seen games at the Dome and really connect with intercollegiate sports.”
