PROVIDENCE – The Syracuse University softball team (8-20, 1-1) opened BIG EAST Conference play with a doubleheader split at Providence College (9-8, 1-1) today at Raymond Field. SU gave away a 2-0 lead and suffered a 3-2 setback in game one, and earned a 3-0 victory in game two. Junior DP/RHP Chanel Roehner retired 12 of the last 14 PC batters and threw a beauty in game two, striking out five, in a two-hit complete game seven-inning shutout performance. The junior also had a great day at the plate, ending the day with a .714 batting average, going 5-for-7 with three RBI, two doubles and one stolen base.
Syracuse’s mistakes cost the Orange the first game of the doubleheader. SU recorded four errors and left seven runners on base in the 3-2 loss.
The Orange started quickly in the first inning of the first game with singles by sophomores Tonye McCorkle and Heather Kim and a two-run, two-out RBI double by Roehner to give SU the 2-0 lead.
Providence loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and scored two runs to send the game into extra innings where PC’s Katie Ross hit a walk-off solo home run to left field to give the Friars the 3-2 victory.
Freshman RHP Brittany Gardner pitched a five-strikeout, ten-hit eight-inning complete game in the loss.
SU also got off to a fast start in the second game putting its first two batters on base, as freshman Ev Anderson doubled and McCorkle reached first on an error. Anderson and McCorkle both scored off RBI from Kim and Roehner, respectively, giving the Orange another 2-0 advantage.
McCorkle scored again the third inning off a RBI double by Kim.
Neither team would generate any other offense, and Roehner pitched SU to victory.
Syracuse will continue its road trip with a doubleheader against BIG EAST rival Connecticut on Sunday, March 25 at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
