
Zawadzki Joins Century Club In SU's Win Against Missouri

Syracuse, N.Y.-The Syracuse women’s tennis team (5-7) beat Missouri, 5-2, in a non-conference dual match on Saturday, March 24. It was the second-consecutive win for the Orange and its first ever against Missouri. Junior Catherine Zawadzki earned her 100th career victory with a win at No. 3 singles.
Despite playing its first dual match in nearly three weeks, the Orange won the doubles point and four singles matches. Syracuse claimed its first doubles point in its last seven matches. Junior Olga Votavova and sophomore Maria Vasilyeva won at No. 1, 8-4. Zaeadzki and freshman Chelsea Jones fought hard at No. 2, nearly erasing an early 5-2 deficit, but lost, 9-7. The point came down to the match at No. 3, where Lipton and senior Carolina Huignard jumped out to an early lead and held on for victory, 8-5.
In singles action, Votavova and Vasilyeva were both victorious in straight sets. Votavova won at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2, and Vasilyeva won at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2. Both players have played extremely well of late, with Votavova winning her last four matches and Vasilyeva winning her last three.
After being blanked in the first set, Zawadzki battled back to win at No. 3, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. Zawadzki became the 28th player to join the SU Century Club. Lipton was the other Orange singles winner, beating Raquel Wagner at No. 5, 5-7, 7-5, (10-7). She now has 141 career victories, putting her one win behind Shervin Saedinia for seventh place on the all-time wins list.
Syracuse visits Cinncinnati on Friday, March 30, at 7 p.m.
