College Station, Texas – The Orange softball team split a pair of games in the first day of the Texas A&M Invitational. The Orange won its first game of the day, defeating McNeese State, 9-2, before losing a hard-fought game with No. 4/5 Texas A&M, 2-1. Freshman Brittany Gardner had a strong day, allowing only two earned runs in 13 innings.
Against McNeese State, Rachel Tilford posted two hits, including one home run, and scored two runs and picked up two RBI. Erin Gray also recorded two hits and two runs for the Orange. Chanel Roehner also homered for the Orange. Gardner pitched a complete game, allowing only two runs and zero earned runs.
The Orange (2-10) started the game strong, scoring three runs in the first inning. Tonye McCorkle opened the game with a walk. After Ev Anderson hit into a fielder’s choice and Roehner grounded out, Tilford hit her third home run of the season. Gray then singled and scored after two errors by McNeese State (8-15).
The Orange continued its strong offensive output, scoring a total of eight runs during the first three innings. Roehner hit her first home run of the season during the second inning, a two-run blast. McNeese State walked in three runners during the third inning.
Gardner once again had an impressive showing in the circle during SU’s second game, allowing the nationally-ranked Aggies (16-2) to only two runs and six hits. Lindsay Wasek went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Orange offense.
The Aggies grabbed the early lead, 1-0, with a home run in the second inning but the Orange responded in the fourth. Roehner singled, stole second and then advanced to on a sacrifice bunt before Wasek singled her home to knot the game at one. Texas A&M scored the decisive second run with a homer in the fifth inning.
Syracuse continues play at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, competing against McNeese State and Illinois.
