Evanston, Ill. – The eighth-ranked Orange played the top-ranked team in the country tough but in the end, No. 1 Northwestern prevailed, 10-7, in a tight contest.
Sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) led the SU (6-4) offense, scoring three goals and adding an assist for four points. Senior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) chipped in three points on two goals and one assist, while junior Bridget Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) each added one goal. Sophomore Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) and freshman Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) both registered an assist to round out the Syracuse scoring.
Northwestern (6-1) opened the scoring, recording the game’s first goal 2:07 into the contest. Rowan answered for the Orange, scoring 3:30 later. The teams traded two more goals apiece as every time the Wildcats took the lead, Syracuse would answer right back and tie the game.
However, with the teams knotted at three, Northwestern scored the game’s next five goals. The Wildcats tallied two scores in the final 2:13 of the first half and netted the first three goals of the second stanza during the opening eight minutes of the period to grab an 8-3 advantage.
The Orange did not give up and got back into the game by scoring three-consecutive goals against the nation’s top defense. Rowan began the SU charge with 19:43 remaining and Looney scored her first goal of the afternoon with 14:34 left in the game. Despite Northwestern’s attempt at stalling, DePetris added another SU goal as the Orange pulled to within two, 8-6, with 10:17 left in the game.
Syracuse’s rally came up short. Northwestern answered SU’s run with two goals of its own before Rowan scored her third and the game’s final goal with 3:05 left in regulation.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amber Pardee-Hill (Lewiston, N.Y.) stopped nine Northwestern shots in the cage, while the Wildcats’ Morgan Lathrop recorded five saves. Aly Josephs led Northwestern with three goals.
The Wildcats outshot the Orange, 30-24, and held the advantage in the draw circle, 12-7. Northwestern won the last five draw controls of the game to halt Syracuse’s attempt at a rally.
The Orange, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, will look to rebound and get back on the winning track at Colgate. Syracuse has 12 days off before returning to the field against the Raiders on April 11.
